10-24-2018 Email to Parents/Guardians re: Vaping

Dear Marlin Parents/Guardians,

We are hearing that there are a significant number of teenagers in our community and across the state using e-cigarettes (aka "vaping"), the most popular of which is called Juul. It is small and resembles a USB flash drive and is easy to hide.

We are concerned about our students and we want to make sure students and parents are aware of the dangers of vaping. It is not just "harmless water vapor" as many teenagers believe.

As a result of our concerns, we are beginning a campaign to educate our students, families, and community about vaping.

We encourage all parents/guardians to read this article about vaping and discuss it with your children (as age-appropriate).

We would also like to take the opportunity to remind everyone that it is illegal to possess or use e-cigarettes on any school district property or at any school-related event.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact a school guidance counselor, the school nurse, or a school administrator.

Sincerely,
Sharon McKinney
Superintendent of Schools
